Almost half of seniors (43%) say they feel lonely and isolated, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4383762\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a landmark study<\/a>\u00a0by the University of California at San Francisco. Those numbers are likely under-reported because elders feel awkward or self-conscious talking about these feelings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeline.com\/blog\/removing-loneliness-from-the-aging-process-to-empower-seniors\/\">Addressing isolation and loneliness in seniors<\/a> is critical, though, because beyond the emotional impact, being lonely also affects cognitive and physical health.<\/p>\n<h2>What Loneliness Is<\/h2>\n<p>To better understand loneliness in older adults, let\u2019s define it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLoneliness is the state of socially and\/or emotionally feeling isolated, separate, apart from others \u2013 disconnected,\u201d explains Julia Lunsford, a geriatric psychiatrist in the Departments of Psychiatry and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/aging\/patients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geriatric Medicine<\/a> at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. \u201cIt\u2019s not the same thing as being alone or in solitude.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, many of the seniors in the UCSF study who reported feeling lonely were married or living with other people.<\/p>\n<h2>What Loneliness Looks Like in Older Adults<\/h2>\n<p>Spotting loneliness in yourself or another person can be hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the most common physical and behavioral signs of loneliness and\/or depression include persistent sadness and lack of motivation or energy,\u201d notes Charla Anderson, Texas Regional Director of Clinical Operations for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oceanshealthcare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oceans Healthcare<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Periodic feelings of loneliness are a normal part of aging, but prolonged loneliness and isolation are as serious as depression \u2013 and deserve professional help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so important to address feelings of loneliness as soon as possible because early intervention can positively affect the quality of life,\u201d she continues. \u201cIf loneliness is not addressed quickly, the feelings only increase and can manifest into more serious issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>How Loneliness Affects Seniors<\/h2>\n<p>Researchers at UCSF and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3874845\/?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Chicago<\/a>\u00a0found that senior citizens\u2019 loneliness is associated with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Decreased mobility<\/li>\n<li>Reduced participation in the activities of daily living<\/li>\n<li>Inability to complete tasks requiring upper extremities<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty climbing<\/li>\n<li>Impaired cognitive performance<\/li>\n<li>Increased incidence of Alzheimer\u2019s and dementia<\/li>\n<li>Higher likelihood of depression, stress and\/or anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Lower self-esteem<\/li>\n<li>Loss of executive control<\/li>\n<li>Higher risk of suicide and death<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other conditions exacerbated by isolation include hypertension, chronic pain, malnutrition, non-compliance with medications, increased substance abuse, and decreased sleep.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Combat Loneliness<\/h2>\n<p>Luckily, loneliness and its health effects can be lessened or reversed by\u00a0increasing social engagement and connection.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use technology to connect to family and friends via video chats and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeline.com\/blog\/social-media-for-seniors\/\">social media apps<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Play games\u00a0at home, at a community center or even with others online<\/li>\n<li>Pursue interests with others, like a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeline.com\/blog\/5-proven-benefits-of-reading-for-seniors\/\">book group<\/a>\u00a0or a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeline.com\/blog\/gardening-for-seniors-better-health\/\">garden club<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Stay active with an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeline.com\/blog\/train-smart-recover-fast-tips-for-active-senior-men\/\">exercise class<\/a>,\u00a0team sports\u00a0or mall walking<\/li>\n<li>Arrange for Meals on Wheels and social visits to your home<\/li>\n<li>Activate your faith community for assistance and social interaction<\/li>\n<li>Take\u00a0day trips\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeline.com\/blog\/senior-air-travel-tsa\/\">longer excursions<\/a>\u00a0to experience new places and cultures<\/li>\n<li>Use Lyft and other transportation options to continue going out even after you\u00a0stop driving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Family members and friends can also help reduce aging parents\u2019 loneliness and the effects of social isolation in the elderly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLoved ones and caregivers must listen and observe seniors, connect or reach out to them as much as possible and plan and make time for them to interact and reflect,\u201d Anderson says. And if you suspect loneliness, invite them to talk to their care team or re-engage socially.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding loneliness and how it impacts senior health and longevity is the first step to a higher quality of life in our later years. Continuing to participate in daily living, even if we have to adopt new ways to do it, ensures that we remain happy and active for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLoneliness does not have to be synonymous with aging,\u201d Lunsford asserts. \u201cIt is not inevitable.
