Stay socially engaged.<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSocial isolation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeline.com\/blog\/how-to-live-longer-by-losing-loneliness\/\">loneliness<\/a> decrease our satisfaction with life and increase symptoms of mental illness\u2026and symptoms of illnesses and pain,\u201d notes JanaLee Wagner, DSW, MSW, LICSW, owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/newpulsecounseling.com\/\">New Pulse Counseling<\/a> in Walla Walla, WA. \u201cSocial activity increases physical health, decreasing risks for many diagnoses older Americans [experience] like heart disease, strokes, and diabetes among many others.\u00a0And those who are socially active have faster recovery periods for acute illnesses and surgeries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why, she says, \u201ceveryone needs to have friends and socialize. Join a club, go to the Senior Center, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeline.com\/blog\/technology-for-seniors-use-it-to-stay-connected-with-your-aging-parents\/\">use an app<\/a> to make and maintain friends.\u201d You can find in-person groups in your area and online communities accessible from anywhere. Social platforms like Facebook keep many solo seniors connected to people near and far. Specialized apps, like Lifeline Cares, enable you to share well-being updates and medical information securely with a select group of relatives and friends. You and your care circle can use the app, or the Lifeline device, to check in with each other and stay in touch on important health issues you shouldn\u2019t share on social media.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeline.com\/cares-app\/\"><em>Get to know the Lifeline Cares app.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>2. Design for aging in place.<\/h2>\n<p>Growing older in our own homes increases our sense of autonomy and independence. It can also help us feel less isolated and lonely. As our needs change, our living space should change with us, according to Heidi Huynh, owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ascendtherapypnw.com\/\">Ascend Therapy Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSet up your environment and daily routines to work for you,\u201d the Aurora, CO-based occupational therapist notes. \u201cLiving areas may need to be adjusted to make things easier and safer for you. This may include placing often-used items in easily accessible areas or [installing] a shower chair or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeline.com\/blog\/how-to-install-grab-bars-in-no-time\/\">toilet safety frame<\/a> in the bathroom.\u201d Consider meeting with an occupational therapist or a certified aging-in-place specialist for insights from skilled professionals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/f.hubspotusercontent30.net\/hubfs\/5835435\/Lifeline%20Consumer%20Files\/How%20to%20Create%20a%20Safer%20Home%20Booklet_2021.pdf\"><em>See more ideas for how to make your home safer from simple changes to larger projects.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>3. Work out for physical and cognitive health.<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cKeeping both your body and brain active can help prevent falls, ER visits, nursing home placement, isolation, depression, and loneliness,\u201d explains Olivia Evans, owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/olivia-evans-cdp-cmdcp-81512322\/?trk=public_profile_browsemap\">Purple Hydrangea Dementia Care, Consultation &amp; Support<\/a> in Chelmsford, MA. \u201cPhysical movement &#8212; stretching, cardio, resistance, and balance &#8212; keeps communication moving in our brains,\u201d says the certified dementia practitioner and Montessori dementia care professional. \u201cEven small movements like grabbing or reaching can help us stay mobile for everyday tasks.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeline.com\/blog\/low-impact-exercise-for-senior-health-and-happiness\/\">Low-impact or -intensity physical activity<\/a> also is beneficial.<\/p>\n<p>As long as your doctor OKs it, you can continue your normal exercise and activities. Practice fall prevention.<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWhile falls become more common with advancing age, they should not be considered a part of normal aging,\u201d notes Caroline Morris, a board-certified geriatric clinical specialist and owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/carolinemorris.com\/\">Morris Clinic<\/a> in Alexandria, VA. That\u2019s why she recommends learning about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeline.com\/category\/fall-prevention\/\">fall prevention<\/a>. Your doctor\u2019s office or local council on aging can recommend a community-based program, but you might also pursue an individualized fall risk assessment and balance training from a physical therapist, and a home safety evaluation from an occupational therapist.<\/p>\n<p>Fall prevention programs are a key factor in reducing our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeline.com\/blog\/how-to-help-a-senior-overcome-a-fear-of-falling\/\">fear of falling<\/a>, which can trigger \u201cfear avoidance behaviors\u201d. Morris explains: \u201cThat\u2019s when you\u2019re basically avoiding any activity that could theoretically increase the risk of a fall. This often results in becoming more sedentary and socially isolated, which in turn <em>increases <\/em>the risk of falling and other negative health events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeline.com\/blog\/5-important-fall-prevention-tips-for-older-adults\/\"><em>Review 5 ways to prevent falls at home and elsewhere.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>5. Invest in security and peace of mind.<\/h2>\n<p>Concerns over our personal well-being and safety can be higher when we\u2019re on our own. Kristen Bolig, the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/securitynerd.com\/\">Security Nerd<\/a>, says the key is staying connected. \u201cI always recommend seniors living alone establish connections with their neighbors and community,\u201d the Fort Mill, SC-based consultant says. \u201cThe neighbors we have even a passing relationship to develop a passive awareness of our patterns and routines and will notice if something changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also recommends investing in technology. \u201cI tend to recommend [home security solutions] which are cheaper and can be controlled through a smart home device like an Alexa,\u201d she says. These systems can automatically adjust interior and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifeline.com\/blog\/how-motion-detector-lights-can-help-seniors-avoid-falls\/\">exterior lighting<\/a>, capture images of people around your home and alert authorities. A medical alert system ensures that help is seconds away for any kind of emergency, from feeling dizzy to experiencing loneliness or recovering from a fall.
